But the average hides the real story — a wide plateau from 80 to 140 BPM covering 70% of tracks, a second bump at 160–180 (phonk and funk territory), and a clear lean toward minor keys, led by A minor. Every guide to "the perfect TikTok song tempo" quotes someone else's guess. We'd rather measure. Mean tempo lands at 120.6 BPM — but notice how flat the middle is. There is no single "viral tempo": 80–99, 100–119, and 120–139 each hold an almost identical ~23% slice. What the distribution actually says is that short-video sound lives on a 60-BPM-wide plateau, with meaningful shoulders on both sides.
The 80–99 bucket is bigger than it should be
In mainstream release data, sub-100 BPM is a minority zone. Here it's 22.9% — and the inflation has a specific cause: slowed edits. Take a 120 BPM pop song, slow it 15%, and it lands near 102; slow a 110 BPM track and you're in the low 90s. Since roughly one in five identified tracks in our database is a declared remix or slowed version (full data report here), a chunk of the downtempo bucket is really "mid-tempo originals, chemically altered". Measured tempo describes what viewers hear, and what they hear is slower than what labels release.
The 160–179 shoulder is the montagem/phonk zone
The second interesting bump: nearly one track in ten sits at 160–179 BPM. That range maps cleanly onto Brazilian funk/montagem edits and drift phonk — the exact genres that dominate our July breakout chart. If the plateau is the mainstream, this shoulder is the internet-native scene.

The top three slots all go to minor keys, with A minor clearly ahead. Some of that is music theory economics — A minor is the no-sharps, no-flats minor key, the default of bedroom production — and some is mood: the moody, nostalgic palette that powers slowed+reverb culture skews minor by nature. Producers chasing the short-video aesthetic aren't writing sunshine.
What Creators Can Do With This
- Match cut rhythm to the plateau. At 90–140 BPM, one beat = 0.43–0.67 s. Cutting on every second beat gives you a 0.9–1.3 s shot length — the pacing most fast edits already gravitate to. Our BPM editing guide goes deeper on beat-synced cutting.
- Check the actual tempo of the version you're using. If you grabbed a slowed edit, your beat grid is ~15% off the original master's published BPM. Run the clip through the BPM & Key Finder rather than trusting a lyrics site.
- Blending tracks? Match keys first. With A minor / C major so dominant, odds are decent two viral tracks are already compatible — the table above is effectively a mixing cheat sheet.
