Most of our guides cover pasting a link — TikTok, Reels, Shorts, X. But a huge amount of short video lives where links don't work: Facebook Reels behind login walls, Snapchat Spotlight, WhatsApp statuses that expire in 24 hours, videos forwarded in group chats, WeChat Channels, or a clip someone AirDropped you three weeks ago. For all of those, the answer is the same: work from the video file itself.
Step 1: Get the Video as a File
If you can save it directly
A downloaded or forwarded video (WhatsApp, Telegram, AirDrop, camera roll) is already perfect — skip to Step 2. File quality beats screen recording, so always prefer a real file when one exists.
If you can't — screen-record it
iPhone: Settings → Control Center → add Screen Recording. Then open the video, swipe into Control Center, and long-press the record button. Crucial detail: tap the microphone icon OFF — you want internal audio only, and iOS captures in-app sound automatically. Recording with the mic on layers room noise over the music and tanks recognition accuracy.
Android: pull down Quick Settings → Screen record. When prompted for sound, choose "Media sound" (internal audio), not "Microphone" and not "Media + mic". Same reason.
Play the video at full volume from the beginning, let it run through the section where the music is most audible, then stop. Don't scrub or pause mid-recording — every interruption cuts into the usable audio.
Step 2: Trim to the Music
Recognition works on the clearest window, not the longest one. In your phone's built-in editor (Photos on iOS, Gallery/Google Photos on Android), trim the recording to roughly 15–30 seconds where the music dominates:
- Prefer sections with no talking — intros, transitions, or outro seconds where narration stops. Voice-over sitting on top of music is the single biggest accuracy killer (our failure-mode data explains why).
- Skip sections with heavy sound effects, laughter, or applause.
- If the video uses two different songs, trim two separate clips and identify them separately.
Step 3: Upload and Identify
Open the ClipMusic video music finder, choose your video file in the upload area, and press Identify upload. MP3, WAV, M4A, and MP4 files up to 10 minutes and 64MB are accepted, with no account required. Files over 5 minutes are automatically trimmed in your browser to their loudest 30 seconds before upload. To identify a specific part, trim it yourself to 5 minutes or less. Keep the page open while the file uploads and the engine checks its audio segments for matches. Clips with at least 10 seconds of clear music work best. Results are not guaranteed; listen to the matches to confirm the song and version.

When Even This Fails
If a clean upload still returns nothing, the audio usually falls into one of three buckets: an unreleased or private track (bedroom producers posting exclusively to one platform), audio modified beyond recovery (extreme pitch + speed + reverb stacking), or original speech/ambient sound with no underlying song at all.
