Quick answer: Tap the music sticker if there is one — that's the easiest win. If there's no sticker, the reliable fix is to find the same clip as a Reel and paste that link into ClipMusic. Stories are harder than Reels because they vanish in 24 hours and rarely have a shareable link.
Instagram Stories are the trickiest place to identify music. They disappear after 24 hours, they don't expose a permanent video URL the way Reels do, and the music sticker is only there if the poster chose to add it. Here's the realistic playbook, from easiest to last resort.
First: Look for the Music Sticker
If the person added music through Instagram's own library, there's usually a music sticker on the Story showing the song title and artist. Tap it — you can often go straight to the track or find more Stories using it. This is the fastest path, but it only works when the poster used a sticker, which is far from guaranteed.
If There's No Sticker
No sticker means Instagram isn't telling you anything, and there's no link to paste. Your options, ranked:
| Situation | Best Move | Reliability |
|---|---|---|
| It's a re-shared Reel | Open the original Reel, copy its link, identify | High |
| It's the creator's own audio | Check their Reels/profile for the same clip | Medium |
| Original Story only | Screen-record, then identify the recording | Lower |
| Posted by someone you know | Just DM and ask | High |
Best Case: It Was Shared from a Reel
A lot of Stories are just re-shared Reels. If you see a "watch the Reel" chip or the original creator tagged, open that Reel, tap the three dots, copy the link, and paste it into the music finder. Reels have permanent links and clean audio, so this is the most reliable route. Our Reels guide covers it step by step.
Look for the Same Clip in Their Reels
Creators reuse audio. If the Story shows a track you want, check that account's Reels — the same sound often appears in a permanent post you can link to.
Last Resort: Screen-Record
If it's an original Story with no link anywhere, screen-record it before the 24 hours run out. A screen recording at least preserves the audio so you can try to identify it — though a re-recording is lower quality than working from an original link.
Why Stories Are Harder Than Reels
- They expire. After 24 hours the Story — and your chance — is gone. Act while it's up.
- No public URL. Stories don't give you the shareable, permanent link that link-based identification works best with.
- Optional music tag. The sticker only exists if the poster added it; custom or external audio shows nothing.
